Planning to Decorate a Home Theater

When decorating your home theater, you should first decide what features you want it the room. We knew we wanted theater seating, but did not know if we should put in one row or two. We ultimately decided on two rows with the second row raised up 8 inches higher than the first. This decision was made once we measured the room and found we had enough space for two rows. We also decided we wanted plush theater style carpeting. After shopping around, we found there were not a lot of choices. Most stores carried the same brand, with varying prices. We could have used regular carpeting or standard theater style carpeting, which would have been much cheaper. We choose a red carpet with gold and dark green paisley design.

Next, the decision of the wall treatments needs to be planned. We could have just painted the walls and left it like that, but we decided we wanted some drama and dimension to the room. So we choose to have columns with sconces on them and in between the columns would be fabric panels to help with sound deadening. We choose of use black on the ceiling and molding and gold as the accent color on the columns. The molding around the base and top of the columns was custom designed with black and gold accents. We built custom cabinets for the TV and equipment and painted it black also. We used red velvet material to make curtains for both the window and on each side of the TV as well as a valance across the top of the TV.

Other lighting in our home theater is rope lighting along the edge of the raised second row and along the edge of the raised TV cabinet area. Plus we have recessed lighting by the TV and by the entrance of the room. All of the lighting is on dimmers. In the entrance area we have a black storage cabinet next to our popcorn machine. We found many different styles of popcorn machines on the internet. We choose the old fashioned cart style in red with gold lettering.
